Frequently Asked Questions

How long has the Institute been around?
The Albert H. Small Normandy Institute has been taking teams of teachers and students to France since 2011, and has hosted teams from all 50 states.
How many teams are in a class?
Generally, the Institute accepts fifteen teams per class.
Can teams have more than two members?
Unfortunately not. Teams are limited to one teacher and one student.
What students can apply?
AHSNI is a program for rising sophomores, rising juniors, and rising seniors during the summer of their Institute class.
Why can’t seniors apply?
Due to the nature of the Institute’s final project, presentations to the community following the trip, seniors would be unable to finish the project before leaving for the next step in their academic journey a few months later.
Does everyone in a team need a passport to apply?
No. At the time of application, you do not need to have a passport. However, if selected, every member of a team must obtain one before traveling to France. It is a slow process, so once accepted, members without a passport should apply for one as soon as possible.
Does everyone in a team need to be fully vaccinated for Covid-19 to apply?
Not at the time of application. At the time of application, you do not need to be fully vaccinated. However, AHSNI abides by the rules and regulations of the George Washington University, and if selected, all team members must be compliant with those regulations before arriving in Washington D.C. All members must be compliant with both French and American travel regulations as well by the time of the trip. Members should plan ahead to make sure they are fully compliant within the framework of GW policy.
To clearly sum this up, you don't need to be vaccinated to apply, but if you are accepted, you absolutely must be fully vaccinated (base + booster) by the time you arrive on campus in June. Plan accordingly.
For more information, please see our “Institute Rules and Policies” Page.
Will we be able to go to France?
Yes. We are confident that we will go to France. However, there is always a risk that international circumstances will get in the way. It is no secret that international travel has been more difficult recently. Even if things take a turn for the worse and we are unable to travel internationally, the Institute is determined to bring its members an incredible experience regardless.
Do teachers need to be high school history teachers to apply?
No. We have had teams from other fields as well.
Can student-teacher teams be related?
Yes. We have had teams of parents and children before.
While in DC and France, will students and teachers room together?
No. While in both France and DC, students will be paired with another student and teachers with another teacher.
The home page mentioned a travel stipend. What is that?
For every member of a team, the Institute will reimburse up to $300 to members for travel to and from Washington, D.C. This reimbursement will go to whoever paid for the ticket. So for instance, if one team member pays for both members’ tickets, that member would get up to $600. If an outside party, such as a parent and/or guardian pays for a ticket, the reimbursement would go to them.
Is travel to France paid by the Institute?
Yes, as well as food, room, and board.
Sounds great! Where do I sign up?
When our application portal opens in the summer, you will see a page titled “Applications.” You will get further information there. In the meantime, check out the page “Application Instructions,” to see what the application will look like once open.
